The Pointer's history is an old one, traceable in writing and in works of art back to the middle of the 17th century. While the English Pointer was developed primarily in England, most canine historians credit Spain as the country of origin.
Four breeds went into the development of the Pointer: the Foxhound, Bloodhound, Greyhound, English Bull Terrier and Spanish Pointers. The standard colourings of an English Pointer are liver and white, lemon and white, or black and white. These can be solid colours, speckles, or patches. When Pointers work with hunters, they are often used in combination with a retriever, to point out the prey to the retriever, using the pointer stance. Today the English Pointer is widely regarded as one of the finest upland bird dogs in the world.
