The legs of the Basseet Bleu de Gascogne have been dwarfed to slow down the breed's running speed. The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is not only an excellent hunter but also an obedient companion.

As with most hounds and as the name suggests, the Basseet Bleu de Gascogne has its origins in France. More specifically, from the semi-independent Basque region of Gascogne. References have been found in the 1300's to the large blue hounds of Phebus, Comte de Foix, or Phebus of Gascogne. Although slow, they had great stamina and scent detection and were used to hunt wolves, deer and boar. The blue colour is believed to have developed as a result of developing a dark skin pigment that is better able to withstand the bright sunlight in this region.

The Basseet Bleu de Gascogne breed line is estimated to have contributed to at least eighty other breeds of retrievers and hounds throughout the world.
